Social Media as 20 Year Olds
Social Media as we know it
I am 22 years old, so it is safe to say that I am in the in-between generation. I did not grow up with social media, but I also did. Let me explain so, the generation before me, did not get social media until they were in college. My generation knew about social media (Facebook) in middle school, but we did not get onto the Facebook platform until late middle school early high school. The generation after me grew up with social media, most of them got on to the platforms (Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter) when they were in elementary school. This is a breakdown of the people around me, this may not be true for everyone, but this is a phenomenon that I noticed while wanting to write a blog about social media.
So why do I bring up generational social media? Understanding demographics of the society and the generation gap will help businesses and marketers better target the market they are going after. The breakdown of generations is important to a business or marketer because without understanding the people how the company will best cater to the population they are targeting.
I have researched the social media demographics breakdown. Sprout social has provided some statistics. 75% of user on Instagram are between the ages of 18 and 24. Other astonishing statistic is that 43% of women are on Instagram compared to 31% men. Let’s look at Snapchat; 69% of Snapchat users are between the ages of 13 and 17. The male and female percentage is the same coming in at 24% male and female. Sprout social provides much more information and for several of the social media platforms.
Marketers use this data to help decide where a company should go and what platforms has the most of their target market using it. There is much more research that goes on before the marketers decide what platforms to use. They have to decide their target market first. Once that is narrowed down, they must decide what social media platforms to use. They have to decide on their posting schedule, the content, and track all of their data. A job in social media marketing is way more than just scrolling on Instagram and posting every now and then. Companies have created an entire team for this very purpose.
